No Sound

Installation Support

While Video is running properly, there is no sound.

The first thing to ensure is that your speakers/headphones are plugged in and that the volume has been turned up.  If this is the case, then problem will generally be caused by an incompatible sound driver being installed by the DirectX upgrade.

The first method for restoring the original sound drivers for your sound card may be done as follows:

  • Ensure you have the Installation discs or CDROM for your Sound Card handy.  These discs or CDROM will have come with the computer or sound card when you purchased it.
  • If you do not have the installation discs you should go the website for the Sound Card Manufacturer and download the latest drivers for the make and model of the sound card in your system.
  • Double Click on the 'My Computer' Icon on the desktop to open the window.
  • Double Click on the 'Control Panel' Icon that appears in the 'My Computer" window.
  • In the 'Control Panel' window, click on the the 'System' Icon.
  • Click on the 'Device Manager' Tab
  • Double click the "Sound, Video and Game Controller" branch to expand it.
  • Remove all referrences to the Sound Card that is in your machine.  Do this by clicking on each listing for the Sound device and then click 'Remove'
  • If a Game Port device is listed, click the game port device and then click 'Remove'
  • Click 'OK' and then restart your computer
  • When Windows starts, it should automatically detect your Sound Device and will either installl the drivers or ask you to put the Sound Card driver diskette or CDROM into the machine to install the drivers from the manufacturer.

A problem specific to PC's that use the Cyrix Media GXM processor also may exist.  This sound chipset uses a Soundblaster Emulation driver that is not 100% compatible with the Soundblaster series of audio chipsets.   As a result the DirectX Soundblaster Driver upgrade will not operate with this chipset.  Of note the Compaq Presario line of PC's will show this problem.

To resolve this you need to restore the original Cyrix MediaGXM Soundblaster drivers that came with your PC.  The instructions for doing so will be different depending upon the make and model of computer that uses this chipset.  Full information may be found on the Compaq support website at www.compaq.com, or in your owners manuals.
